A couple of days ago, a small article was published which made me (Alex) reflect on certain aspects of vintage clothing. The article is titled “Why we love vintage clothing” and was written by Ms. Paula Reig from Marie Clarie. You can find it here (Note that it is written in spanish).
Why do we love vintage clothing?
When asking this question, the article refers to “we” as not the vintage clothing gurus or people with deep ties to the industry or that have an already existing passion for vintage clothing. The article wonders why an average person that just goes on about their lives, will at some point, gravitate towards vintage apparel.
Vintage clothing has gained more and more popularity in recent years and there is a reason for this. Ms. Reig provides us with some interesting points by quoting Teresa Castanedo from Vintology. She states that vintage clothing, rather than being a luxury, has become a necessity.
This makes sense when you consider that purchasing vintage apparel directly contributes to reducing the enormous environmental impact that the fashion industry produces.
What do you think? Is pollution or overproduction a factor you consider when purchasing clothes? Let us know below.
Nostalgia – The biggest factor to consider?
This, in my opinion, is the main reason why people look for vintage or retro clothing. In my experience, the older one gets the more nostalgic one becomes.
The past is very special for human beings since it is one of the few unreachable things in life. This, in combination with the fact that we tend to remember the good events in our lives more intensely, results in adoration for long gone times and a strong desire to bring them to our lives once again. Clothing provides a natural way to do this.
But there is a small catch here. Nowadays, you can see a lot of young people (in their teens or 20s) going for vintage clothing. They are still maturing and that nostalgic feeling is close to non-existent in them.
So why is vintage so popular among the youth? The article provides a good point that we cover in the next section, in the meantime, let us know if nostalgia plays an important role for you.
Uniqueness – The key to young generations
In all honesty, we all care what other people think about us. We all want to stand out and be unique, and in younger people, this is present even more.
Vintage clothing, being such a rare sight in today’s world, provides a way to stand out with little to no effort. Another good observation made in the article, states that clothing nowadays is produced in such a massive way that stores sell hundreds or thousands of copies of the same piece each day.
On the other hand, a vintage piece is most likely to be unique, or at least have just a few copies available for the public. This is music to the ears of someone who is truly looking for a unique piece.
An interesting thing to note is that all age groups seem to have a certain desire for vintage apparel, but as time goes on the reason behind it changes, sometimes without them noticing it.
What is the reason you might give vintage a try?
I bet you there are many other reasons why people might consider trying vintage clothing. I totally agree with the reasons presented in Marie Clarie’s article, however, I can think of other important factors.
We previously talked about how the covid pandemic is affecting the fashion industry (check our article here). Some lessons learned from it are that people lean towards vintage clothing because it’s cheaper, because the fashion industry is pushing those products, or simply because they just want to try new things.
Either way, we are thankful and excited that people are opening themselves more and more to this type of fashion. So, in your own eyes, what do you think is the main reason people give vintage clothing a try? We would love to read your ideas in the comment section below.
